UMUSIC AUTUMN

This is a visual identity centered around celebrating and cherishing our physical relationship with music! Ellis Roderick and I submitted this for D&AD 2024 to rebrand UMUSIC AUTUMN. Our version of the Universal Music Group UK festival at Roundhouse would include staff submitting songs to be played that night, all recorded onto a community playlist. Songs performed are pressed onto vinyl, while those not played are immortalized on cassette invitations.

"Create a poster, invite, & visual suite for UMUSIC AUTUMN 2024"

UMUSIC AUTUMN is a music festival! Run by Universal Music Group UK. It’s an exclusive experience for their staff where UMG’s artists perform a night’s show in the London Roundhouse.

Starting off this brief, we did visual research into poster designs, physical music (specificially vinyl), and The Roundhouse in London. We wanted to find what looked the same to know how to look different.

From our research, we found a couple key bits of information:

  • We aren’t interacting with physical media as it slowly becomes completely virtual, where it can be deleted online, and be gone forever.

  • Identities across music are loosing their spark and are forming into an enigma.

  • We needed to create a brand that would appeal to everybody, from the janitors to the record label people, while still retaining individuality.

Key Takeaways

  • We created mass appeal across unique identities in visuals and typography. Vinyls and CDs scans, digitally overlayed and colored, took on a pop-art approach. Helvetica type, popular among people and businesses, was overlayed to mimic those same CDs and vinyls stacked on top of themselves.

  • We created a fun and personal system for everybody to engage in the performance. These features brought back the music to the audience so it’s not a one- time event, but something they can hold onto and cherish.

I’m super proud of this brief! Ellis and I worked extremely hard. We made a nuanced visual identity for an amazing brief. I really enjoyed making the prints and thinking outside the box. It was so much fun to work with them, and I’d do it all again.
